This science experiments of kids will take 20 minutes and then it is just a matter of watching your crystals grow over the next 1-2 weeks. This science experiment is great for preschool – 8th grade!
Day 1 – How to Grow Crystals with Kids
Put coal (or cut up sponges) on a pie plate. Spray the coal until it is moist, but there is not any extra water on the bottom.
Mix together: 3 tablespoons uniodized salt, 3 tablespoons ammonia (smells really strong!), and 6 tablespoons bluing. Stir until the salt is dissolved.
Pour the mixture evenly over the coal. Add a little water, stir, and pour the remaining mixture onto the coals. {You can see 2 year old Tinker Bell was fascinated with what was going on too!}
Put drops of food coloring over the coals. {Areas without food coloring will be white.} Sprinkle with 2 TAB more of salt. 
Put your crystal garden somewhere where it will not be disturbed.

Day 3 Ultiamte Science Experiment for Kids - Growing Crystals
On day 3, pour a mixture of 2TAB ammonia, 2 TAB water, and 2 TAB bluing in the bottom of the pan, careful not to disturb the delicate crystals.
Day 12 Growing Crystals Science Fun
Our science experiment for kids is complete. We ended up with a plate full of large intricate crystals. I think I would add additional food coloring along the process next time as the white layers are covering the pretty colorful crystals.
