How to make Homemade Tortillas

You can use a skillet to make homemade tortillas, but I found the Chef Pro Tortilla Maker makes it go really quickly and easily – essential if you are making homemade tortillas for a family!

Note: If you look on Amazon you will see the tortilla maker is not rated very well. I have no idea why not – we LOVE it! homemade tortillas using tortilla maker

Put dough ball in back middle of preheated press. (If you use a skillet you will need to roll the dough out first)

it takes like 10 seconds each

Close the press and press latch for 7 seconds only. It helps build up steam and flattens them nicely. But if you apply pressure too long the steam will break apart your shell.  Leave closed (without pressing) 8 more seconds.

Open the press and rotate the tortilla 90 degrees. Close and press a couple seconds then leave closed another 10 seconds.

Continue making all your tortillas. I stack them on a plate. They stay warm because it goes quickly and the warmth of the new ones helps keep the previously made tortillas warm.

It goes really fast!

Now you are ready to enjoy your homemade tortillas with whatever you want to put in them. If you like to have tortilla chips to go with them we love the organic blue ones with flax seed that target makes.

Storing Homemade Tortillas

Make sure the shells are completely cook  before putting in a plastic bag and storing in the fridge.  If you don’t let them cool first the condensation holds the shells together and they are nearly impossible to separate to eat as leftovers. (this is especially true if you use whole wheat flour). They will store 4-5 days in the fridge, but may mold in 2 on the counter.

If you have any extra tortillas you'll want to try these Homemade Cinnamon Tortilla Chips. They are delicious!
