Of all the things you will teach your children in your homeschool, none is more important than helping them to know, love, serve, and surrender to God. Memorizing God’s word together as a family is one of the ways you can help to disciple your children. To help families memorize scripture I created these Family Scripture Verse Cards.
Some of you may be avid memorizers of scripture. I applaud your diligence. Others may haven never seriously memorized a Bible verse. Don’t worry – there is no better time to start than right now!
Why Memorize Scripture
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11
The Bible clearly tells us that by memorizing God’s word {the Bible} it will help us to not sin against Him. The more we know about how God wants us to act the better choices we can make. The more we are reminded of His love and purpose for us as we review these verses, the easier it is to make good choices throughout our day – despite all the worldly things trying to sneak in.
I urge you to make scripture memorization a daily discipline with your family.
Not only will you be training up your child in the ways of the Lord, as we parents are instructed to do in Proverbs 22:6. But you will have a chance to impress upon their hearts that you too value memorization. Instead of making it yet another thing requested of children that parents fail to do themselves –memorize God’s word together. Use the time to impress upon them God’s truths, to hear their hearts, to listen to what is in their souls.
It can be as simple as 5 minutes of time reading your new verse together and praying. And that’s okay! Once you get into the habit of spending time together in the word, you’ll find you want to spend more! So pick a time and diligently lead your family in memorizing God’s word together daily.
