Our Pumpkin Seed Turkey Craft is great for using up pumpkin seeds leftover from carving your turkey! We did this craft successfully with a toddler, preschool, Kindergarten, and 2nd grader.
Note: If you still have extra seeds, make sure to try our Caramelized Pumpkin Seed Recipe.
How to Color Pumpkin Seeds
To color pumpkin seeds you’ll need clean, dry, non salted pumpkin seeds. If you save them from your pumpkin make sure you clean & dry them well and then store in the refrigerator or they will mold.
Next, in a zip lock sandwich bag, add 2 teas rubbing alcohol (from the medicine cabinet) and some food coloring (we like McCormick’s neon food coloring or Wilton gel food coloring) and squish to mix well.
Add 3/4 cup or so pumpkin seeds, seal and toss to blend colors. Leave them in the bag flipping over from time to time until you have the intensity of color you’d like.
Then put on parchment paper to dry completely before using. We color pumpkin seeds the night before.
And in case you were wondering, here is how to color pasta and how to dye rice.
Then we set out all our beautifully colored pumpkin seeds on the table. I separated some by color and left a big pile of the rest.
We choose to make color our seeds into nice fall colors.
Pumpkin Seed Turkey Craft
We started by tracing the kids feet on a piece of brown paper. We were thrilled to have Grandma & Grandpa here to craft with us today!
Here is our work table – see it gets messy in our house too!!
For my toddler’s turkey craft I put lines of glue coming out from the foot print turkey. She worked on adding the colored pumpkin seed feathers. It was a perfect toddler craft!
Each of them made their turkey the way they wanted. I love open ended projects that allow kids individual creativity to come out!
