Jesus Tempted in the Desert - Sunday School Lessons for kids from Preschool-4th Grade! Includes fun Candy Minute to Win it ideas, simple sand craft, science object lesson, and more!

Our Sunday School lesson this week was from Matthew 4:1-11 where we talked about how Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert.

This lesson would would work great with kids in Preschool, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade.

Candy Minute to Win it Games

Candy Themed Minute to Win it Games

We started off our lesson by having 5 minute to win it stations. Kids would visit each station and attempt to win it in a minute. Because of the size of our Sunday school class we had all stations running simultaneously; each station accommodated 5 kids.

Why?

Besides being fun, it was about tempting the kids as they not only played with lots of candy, but were also awarded candy if they won the activity. They were given instructions NOT to eat the candy until Ms. Beth said it was time.

Winners were given an un-played with valentine conversation heart to put in their sandwich bag. Towards the end we gave out participation awards too to ensure all kids would have a tempting prize.

Minute to Win it Spoon Relay

Spoon Relay - Minute to Win it Games

We had a masking tape starting line on the floor next to a big bowl of conversation heart candy; each student had a plastic spoon in their lane. About 8 feet away we had a plastic cup for each of the 5 contestants.

We started our timer (we used sand timers from board games) and the kids had to put one heart at a time on the spoon and carry it down to their cup. The kids repeated this as many times as they could until the minute was up. The child with the most hearts in his cup was the winner.

Minute to Win it Candy Corn Stand up

I had a basket with Valentine colored candy corn surrounded by 5 small paper plates. When the timer started children tried to get as many of the candy corn to stand up on their plate in one minute.

Minute to Win it Heart Stack up

Valentines Day Activity for Kids

In the middle of the playing area I had a basket of Valentine Conversation Hearts. Then, all around it were small paper plates. When the minute timer started kids were to stack as many of the valentine hearts on top of each other as they could. The student with the most stacked hearts was the winner.

Minute to Win it Chopstick Pick up

A basket filled with fruit loops was surrounded by five small paper plates with a pair of chopsticks on each plate. When the minute started students had to use their chopsticks to pick up as many fruit loops to move to their plate as possible. The students with the most fruit loops on their plate after one minute was the winner.

Minute to Win it Marshmallow Toss

We had a masking tape line on the floor with a bowl full of mini marshmallows. About 5 feet away (depending on the age of the kids) we had a cup for each of the 5 contestants. When the time started kids had to try to toss as many marshmallows into their cups as possible. At the end of the minute the child with the most marshmallows in their cup was the winner.

Jesus is Tempted in the Desert Bible Craft for Kids

Jesus is tempted bible craft for kids

This was a simple to make bible craft for kids that was a huge hit with our Sunday School class. All you need is:

  • liquid glue

  • cotton ball (1 per child)

  • crafting sand

  • print out on cardstock (there are 3 choices)

use cotton ball to spread out glue

Drizzle some glue on the bear. Then use your cotton ball to evenly spread a thin coat of glue all over the bear only.

cover with crafting sand

Now pour 1/4 cup or so of sand over the glue. Then lift up paper over a bin to shake off the extra sand to save for another child.

1 Corinthinans 10 13 Bible Craft for Kids about temptation

Here is your finished product.

In the printable option we choose (download below) we made a brown bear. The sand not only gave the bear a nice texture, but the sand also reminds us of the desert where Jesus was tempted in our story today.

“And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear ….” 1 Corinthians 10:13

Temptation Object Lesson

We didn’t have time to do this science illustration from Hip Homeschool Moms, but if you are doing this at home I highly recommend it!
