Kids will have fun spotting words that rhyme with these rhyming robot puzzles!
I teach kids to rhyme in a two step sequence.
First, I get them to identify words that rhyme. So for example, I lay out a picture of a cat, tree and bat and ask which two pictures rhyme or sound the same.
Then once the kids can identify pictures that rhyme, I move on to the next step which is getting them to think of words that rhyme on their own.
These rhyming robot puzzles are for kids who are at the first step and need visual support to spot words that rhyme.
Rhyming
Print the robot rhyming puzzles on cardstock or us a laminator for added durability and then cut them out.
I've made the rhyming robots in different colors so that kids beginning to rhyme can work on one set at a time, such as the blue robots before moving on to another set such as the green robots.
To Play:
Explain to the kids that words that rhyme sound the same. I usually give an example such as "cat, mat - they rhyme".
For these robot puzzles, kids need to choose a puzzle piece and say what the picture is and then find a picture that rhymes with it.
If they choose a picture of a bee and then log as the answer, I say something like "bee, log- do they rhyme?". If a child replies yes, then I know they'll need some extra support to complete the puzzles. For these kids, narrow down the puzzle piece options by completing one robot color set at a time. Then help the kids by saying what the picture is and the possible answers, for example "cat, bat, van - what rhymes with cat... bat or van?" If they say van, I encourage them to try again. Then when they say "bat" I praise them and say something like "great job, cat and bat do rhyme, let's try another one". I find this helps to build their confidence and eventually they get the hang of it.
Once the kids begin to show a good understanding of rhyming you can lay out all of the colored robots at the same time and see how they go.
Extension Activity
Choose a completed rhyming puzzle such as "cat and bat" and ask the kids "can you think of any other words that rhyme with cat, bat, ...?"
