In some parts of the United States (like Minnesota) you can actually buy Taco Pizza. But in other states, it is unheard of.
Now don’t tell me you don’t like it if you haven’t tried it! I use to think I didn’t like it either, then I tried it, and let me tell you I LOVE it!
When we moved to a state when you couldn’t buy Taco Pizza I decided it was time to create my own recipe. So I tinkered around and figured out how to make my own taco pizza – even better than the store bought versions in my humble opinion.
Homemade Taco Pizza Recipe
In a bowl mix 1 1/4 cup lukewarm water, 1 teas sugar, and 2 1/4 teas yeast with a fork.
Let it rest for about 5 minutes to activate the yeast; you’ll see it “puff up”
In a mixing bowl mix the following ingredients until blended (I use my dough hook on my Kitchen Aid mixer)
- yeast starter
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/4 cup milk (or water)
- 2 TAB olive oil
Cover with bowl with plastic wrap and put it somewhere warm to rise for 30 minutes. (We set ours near the stove top where we are are either browning the ground beef or preheating the oven.)
While the dough rests, brown 1 lb ground beef. Add in taco seasoning mix and 1/3 cup water.
Preheat oven to 450 F.
Sprinkle pizza pan with cornmeal and roll out the dough right on the pan, pressing it out as needed to cover the pan.
Instead of pizza sauce, this pizza uses taco sauce. Note: it is NOT salsa, it is a sauce. You can use mild, medium, or hot depending on your families preference.
Now sprinkle the cooked, taco seasoned ground beef over the taco sauce.
Sprinkle with 2 cups of Mexi Cheese (or any other variety you like).
Bake in preheated oven (450 F) for 12-14 minutes.
Now you can either top the entire pizza (as pictured) or if you aren’t sure you’ll eat all the pizza you may want to just top each individual slice. That way your leftover pizza will have fresh, crunchy Doritos on the top too.
On the top you are going to layer the following:
- Doritos
- Shredded Lettuce
- Tomatoes (fresh or diced with green chilies)
- Sour Cream
