This Sunday School lesson works great with Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade kids.
Kids will learn about how Jesus calms the storm from Matthew 8:23-27.
Our theme - Jesus has power over creation because He is God the Son.
Jesus Calms the Storm
Sinking Sails Game
We played a game to help recreate the storm so the kids would know what the disciples felt during the storm and that Jesus is always in control.
We made an outline of a boat on the floor using masking tape.
We added a sale we just happened to have laying around (just pvc pipe and a white paper sale that said Jesus has Power)
The 2-3 kids playing the disciples in the boat wore costumes (brown pillowcases with the head and arm spot cut out). Their goal was to get the “water (balled up blue paper) out of the boat.
The remaining kids were the storm and they kept throwing the water in the storm.
This was a simple-to-set-up game that was a huge hit with our group of 30 kids!
Boat Craft
We made a boat as a reminder of our story and that Jesus has power over all things. He even has power over creation.
This was such a fun, cheap, and simple to make craft!
We got a couple of pool noodles from the dollar store. (each pool noodle will make about 20 boats)
Using scissors we cut 10 sections off and then cut the sections in half.
We used a hole punch to make 2 holes in our sales (we used free printable below) and then we inserted a straw in the sale and pressed the bottom into the pool noodle.
It was a great reminder for the kids to take home. And the boat craft actually will float in water.
Hint: We used the boat outline in the telling of our story and even brought in a leaf blower to help the kids feel the storm all around them. It was a wow moment for the kids for sure!
